WORD: McSweeney's Fall Harvest, Lawrence Ferlinghetti award show announced

The week before San Francisco plays host to two of the year’s biggest literary showcases -- Litquake and Bouchercon -- two shindigs take place that are sure to draw hoards of bookish types. Lawrence Ferlinghetti bags an award and San Francisco-based publisher McSweeney’s will have several authors perform readings.

No one has done more for the Bay Area literary scene than Ferlinghetti and his venerable publishing house and bookstore, City Lights. Litquake will bestow its annual Barbary Coast award for 2010 to the poet and artist Ferlinghetti, and to North Beach’s famed purveyors of both books and revolution on on Oct. 2.

Litquake’s event includes an evening of tributes, poetry and music as Ferlinghetti and City Lights Booksellers receive Litquake’s Barbary Coast Award. Poet, author, and rock-n-roller Patti Smith takes the stage with guitarist Lenny Kaye to pay tribute to Ferlinghetti.

Also watch for actress Winona Ryder and several bold faced names like Michael McClure, New Yorker cartoonist Eric Drooker; Ishmael Reed; former San Francisco Poet Laureates Jack Hirschman and Beth Lisick, among others.
