McSweeney's Fall Harvest, Lawrence Ferlinghetti award show announced
The week before San Francisco plays host to two of the year’s biggest
literary showcases -- Litquake and Bouchercon -- two shindigs take
place that are sure to draw hoards of bookish types. Lawrence Ferlinghetti bags an award
and San Francisco-based publisher McSweeney’s will have several authors
perform readings.
No one has done
more for the Bay Area literary scene than Ferlinghetti and his
venerable publishing house and bookstore, City Lights. Litquake will
bestow its annual Barbary Coast award for 2010 to the poet and artist
Ferlinghetti, and to North Beach’s famed purveyors of both books and
revolution on on Oct. 2.
Litquake’s event includes an evening of tributes, poetry and music as
Ferlinghetti and City Lights Booksellers receive Litquake’s Barbary
Coast Award. Poet, author, and rock-n-roller Patti Smith takes the
stage with guitarist Lenny Kaye to pay tribute to Ferlinghetti.
Also watch for actress Winona Ryder and several bold faced names like
Michael McClure, New Yorker cartoonist Eric Drooker; Ishmael Reed;
former San Francisco Poet Laureates Jack Hirschman and Beth Lisick,
among others. Pre-sale tickets
are expected to sell out but there’s also tickets sold at the door.

On Oct. 5, join authors from McSweeney’s as they read from their
respective new books out this fall. Hilton Als, Adam Levin, Peter
Orner, and Darin Strauss will read and also have a conversation with
McSweeney's longtime editor Eli Horowitz. Audience Q&A to follow.
